On Tuesday, January 28th, 2025, the San Diego Housing Federation hosted the Supportive Housing and Resident Services (SHRSA) Institute at the Mingei International Museum. This one-day immersive event brought together over 80 individuals from the supportive housing and resident services community for an enriching day of educational workshops designed to foster collaboration and professional growth.
Throughout the day, attendees had the opportunity to participate in interactive workshops covering a range of crucial topics. These workshops were designed to address the challenges faced by supportive housing professionals and resident services providers alike. The diverse topics included:
Social Media Safety: Protecting Yourself and Your Residents Online
Rental Home Stability Program (RHSP) and Coordinated Eviction Prevention Program
Trauma Care After the Disaster
AT HOME Project in San Diego: Supporting Housing Providers & Tenants
Active Engagement & De-Escalation
Permanent Supportive Housing 101: Understanding the Basics & Best Practices
The hands-on nature of the workshops kept attendees engaged and eager to learn. Of all the workshops, the Trauma Care After the Disaster session received particular praise from attendees for its impactful content and interactive approach.
The day’s event also featured an inspiring keynote address by Loretta Turner, a Leadership Coach & Well-Being Strategist. Loretta's talk centered on the critical importance of self-care for professionals in this line of work. She emphasized that taking care of yourself is key to being able to support others effectively. Her message resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing the idea that well-being and self-care is at the core of providing excellent service in this line of work.
Overall, the SHRSA Institute was a resounding success, with participants leaving feeling energized and equipped with new knowledge and practical skills. It was clear that everyone was eager to apply what they had learned in their day-to-day work.
As we look ahead, we’re excited to announce that the Supportive Housing and Resident Services Academy (SHRSA) will be hosting four quarterly workshops throughout the year. Stay tuned for more information on these upcoming opportunities for professional development and collaboration.
Special thanks to the San Diego Housing Commission for sponsoring this event!
