What Supportive and Affordable Housing Operators Need to Know about Unauthorized Tenants and Squatters
It is common for some of our most vulnerable tenants to experience peer pressure to let someone stay or move into their apartment. Many residents want to help this person out, but they also need to make sure that they abide by the terms of their lease and protect their housing. In California, three days of tenancy and one piece of mail or belongings and someone can claim tenancy. In this workshop we’ll discuss the legal aspects of unauthorized tenants and squatters and what operators can do to protect their properties and their tenants. We’ll also discuss the importance of tenant education and training around the topic so that tenants know what to look out for and how they can help prevent squatters.
