This year's keynotes with Marc Dones and Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber have been added to our YouTube channel. You can also watch our session on Creating Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Messaging with City of San Diego, Climate Action Campaign, PATH, and Voice of San Diego. Our Closing Plenary discusses the Past, Present, and Future of affordable and supportive housing with County Supervisor Lawon-Remer, MAAC, and Midway Community Planning Group.

The San Diego Housing Federation’s annual conference and institutes event brings together more than 600 developers, builders, architects, lenders, property managers, service providers, elected and agency officials and staff, community, and business leaders to share innovative approaches to affordable housing, community, and economic development. The Conference will be presented virtually October 19 – 21, 2021.

Keynote Speakers

Marc Dones, King County Regional Homelessness Authority
Marc Dones (they/them pronouns) is a social entrepreneur, policy strategist, and social justice activist with over 10 years of experience in equitable systems transformation. Prior to taking on the role of inaugural CEO for the King County Regional Homelessness Authority, Marc was the founder and ED of the National Innovation Service (NIS), a consulting firm that helps governments redesign their approaches to supporting marginalized populations. Marc has also held leadership roles in social impact, policy and program design, and continuous improvement at the Center for Social Innovation (C4 Innovations), and is a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts (SVA). Marc holds a degree from NYU in Psychiatric Anthropology and is an experienced equity trainer.

Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis, National City
First being elected in 2008 (only the 2nd woman elected to the Council), ten years later Alejandra was proud to receive overwhelming support to become the first Latina Mayor of National City. Regionally, she serves on the SANDAG, Sweetwater Authority and MTS Board.

Mayor Sotelo-Solis is a third generation National City resident, graduate of Sweetwater High School and alumnae of UC San Diego with a degree in Political Science. She is a proud board member of the SUHi Foundation which provides college scholarships to graduates of her alma mater and serves on the NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected Officials) Educational Fund Board of Directors.

Professionally, Alejandra is President/CEO of her consulting company La Pluma Strategies focusing on non-profit advocacy and grant writing and is raising her 3 daughters alongside her husband Arturo, Sweetwater Union High School District Trustee.

Dr. Akilah Weber, California Assemblymember 79th District
Dr. Akilah Weber was elected April 2021 to represent California's 79th Assembly District, which includes parts of Southeast San Diego, Bonita, Chula Vista, La Mesa, Lemon Grove and National City. Dr. Akilah Weber is a medical doctor, educator, City Councilmember, San Diego native, and mom to two young boys.

Dr. Weber is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, and she is the founder and past director of the Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology Division at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. She also served as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at UCSD.

Dr. Weber has served on the La Mesa City Council where she’s worked to implement the city’s Climate Action Plan and championed the creation of both a Community Police Oversight Board and the La Mesa homelessness task force. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Dr. Weber has also been on the frontlines of the city’s efforts to protect public health. Her long record of community activism includes serving on the boards of La Mesa Conversations and the La Mesa-Foothills Democratic Club, and volunteering as the science coordinator for the Links to STEM program for children who are underrepresented in STEM fields.

Dr. Weber grew up in the Oak Park neighborhood of San Diego and graduated from Encanto Elementary School and Gompers Secondary School. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and her Medical degree from the University of Rochester Medical School. Dr. Weber completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Chicago Cook County Hospital and her fellowship in Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Weber, and her husband, Dennis, live in La Mesa, with their boys, Kadir and Jalil, and their rescue dog, Shaka. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and The Links, Incorporated.

Cancellation/Refund Deadline: Friday, October 1st

Registrants canceling their registration on or before Friday, October 1st will receive a full refund. Refund requests submitted after the deadline are not guaranteed and will be reviewed on an individual basis for extenuating circumstances. To submit a refund request, please email events@housingsandiego.org.

Substitution Deadline: Friday, October 1st

Registrants who are no longer able to attend may transfer their ticket to another person. Substitutions will be accepted until Friday, October 1st. This will ensure that all guests will receive the necessary instructions and links to access the virtual event.
