COVID-19 AFFORDABLE AND SUPPORTIVE HOUSING SHARING AND INFORMATION SESSION 12: Motivational Interviewing

This series of online convening’s will explore crucial issues for the affordable and supportive resident services and property management community in San Diego related to the COVID-19 crisis. Join the San Diego Housing Federation, CSH, and LeSar Development in twice-a-month 90-minute virtual COVID-19 information and sharing sessions.

Our Tuesday, September 22nd session will discuss motivational interviewing with Sarah Bartholomew from Father Joe’s Villages. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidenced-based practice that originated in the field of supportive services. However, the principles of MI can be utilized by anyone working with special needs populations, including Resident Managers and Maintenance staff. MI techniques help staff members to navigate conflict and increase positive working relationships while also building a tenant’s self-esteem and ability to address issues independently. This training will focus on the basic principles of MI, intervention techniques that staff can implement in a variety of contexts, and common “traps” that occur in supportive housing environments and how to use MI to avoid them.
