Robert Hudson, Encanto Village
Robert Hudson was born and raised in Jonesborough, Louisiana and has two grown sons. He moved to San Diego in 1977 on an athletic scholarship from Grambling State University, to San Diego State University, where he briefly played basketball. Robert loves to tell the story about the time he was at SDSU, as a tansfer student, and Tony Gwynn, was a freshman. Shortly, after not making the SDSU basketball team he attended San Diego City College.
For one year and 11 months Robert, experienced homelessness. During this time he found a bed at the St. Vincent de Paul Shelter, in downtown San Diego. Through his participation in the Alpha Project, he was able to apply to the Encanto Village waitlist for possible housing. The day he was approved he was so happy, and the day he moved in he said to himself, “This will be my home Until the Lord Says Different”. Robert owns his own landscaping company, Bob Hudson Landscaping and Tree Service. For the past 20 years he has done landscaping throughout San Diego. He employees’ men who were experiencing homelessness, at the same time he was living at the St. Vincent de Paul Shelter. Recently, Robert, became a caregiver for a friend, who recently acquired a permanent home at the Beacon in downtown San Diego. He helps his friend with exercise for breathing, he has CPOD, and errands and Dr.’s appointments. Robert has used his business in landscaping to help others who have experienced homelessness, to empower them to move forward. He is thankful for everything that has happened for him over the last year and is especially thankful for his home at Encanto Village.
