John Ahlswede’s story of Building a Foundation for Change - "With You All the Way”

When John Ahlswede founded Sun Country Builders in 1979, he could never have imagined the profound ripple effect his work would have on communities across Southern California. What started as a two-person operation has grown into a leading construction firm, responsible for building over 8,700 affordable housing units and reshaping the lives of thousands. But for John, the numbers only tell part of the story. When he looks back on his 45 years at Sun Country Builders, he sees more than construction projects—he sees stories of transformation. “Every project we take on represents something much bigger than the buildings themselves,” John reflects. “It’s about giving families a place where they feel secure, where their kids can thrive, and where dignity and stability are restored. That’s the legacy we aim to build.”

Raised in Vista, California, John’s values were shaped by the small-town spirit of hard work and community. As a young man, he worked alongside his father in the family nursery before realizing his true calling was in construction. Starting as a laborer on a concrete crew, he quickly worked his way up to becoming a general contractor. His determination and passion for making a difference led him to specialize in affordable housing—a decision that would change countless lives, including his own. But it was his connection with the San Diego Housing Federation that truly brought his mission to life.

“SDHF has been with me and Sun Country Builders from the very beginning,” John shares. “They’re more than a resource; they’re a partner who supports us at every stage, whether it’s navigating new policies, connecting with industry leaders, or providing the education we need to stay ahead.”

John first connected with SDHF during its early days, attending events and even serving on its Board of Directors. “Those were formative years for SDHF,” John recalls. “We saw the organization’s potential to not just advocate for affordable housing but to unite the industry and create lasting change. Hiring Tom Scott as Executive Director during my time on the Board was a turning point that set the stage for the Federation’s future success.”

Over the years, John and his team have turned to SDHF time and again, relying on their workshops, conferences, and advocacy efforts to stay informed and inspired. “They help us anticipate challenges and find solutions, always with the same unwavering commitment to the mission,” John explains. “SDHF is truly with us all the way.”

John’s involvement with SDHF has led to many memorable moments, particularly at the annual Ruby Awards, which celebrate excellence in affordable housing. “The Ruby Awards are always a highlight,” John says. “It’s a time to come together as a community, celebrate our successes, and be reminded of the incredible work happening across the region.”

In 2024, Sun Country Builders sponsored the Outstanding Service to Residents Award and was honored for their work on Plaza Del Sol and City Heights Place, which won Project of the Year New Construction. “Those moments reinforce why we do this work,” John shares. “Seeing the difference it makes in people’s lives is what keeps us going.”

For John and Sun Country Builders, being involved with SDHF isn’t just professional—it’s personal. Whether presenting awards at the Ruby Awards, building transformative projects like, or gaining valuable insights from SDHF’s workshops, John’s commitment mirrors SDHF’s ethos: fostering collaboration, innovation, and compassion in the housing industry.

“The Federation connects us all—advocates, lenders, developers, resident service providers, and builders. Together, we meet the affordable housing needs in our region,” John emphasizes. “SDHF is more than an organization. They’re a lifeline for the industry and the people we serve.”

Your Support Matters

For John, the San Diego Housing Federation isn’t just an organization—it’s a vital force that connects and empowers everyone involved in affordable housing. “SDHF is the glue that holds this industry together,” he says. “They ensure we’re not working in silos but as a united front, tackling some of the toughest challenges our region faces.”

The Federation’s impact extends far beyond its members. Through its advocacy, education, and collaboration, SDHF creates pathways to stability for families across San Diego County. Campaigns like With You All the Way highlight these efforts, celebrating the resilience and innovation of the entire affordable housing community.

“SDHF has been with me every step of the way,” John emphasizes. “And now, I’m asking you to join them. Your support will ensure they can continue this critical work and help us build a future where everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home. When you support SDHF, you’re helping build more than housing. You’re creating opportunities, providing stability, and transforming lives.”
