The San Diego Housing Federation Recognizes Jim Schmid as the 2024 Recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Ruby Award

The 34th Annual Ruby Awards Celebrates Leadership, Innovation and Impact in Affordable Housing

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Housing Federation will honor Jim Schmid, Founder and Chairman of Chelsea Investment Corporation, with the Lifetime Achievement Award recognition at its upcoming Ruby Awards ceremony on June 6.

The signature event is the country’s largest affordable housing industry recognition event honoring the best people, projects, and achievements during the past year. The 34th annual Ruby Awards will be held June 6, 2024, from 5:30 – 10 p.m. at the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina.

The Board of Directors selects the Lifetime Achievement recipient who honors professionals with more than two decades of leadership, innovation, and impact in the affordable housing field. Recipients embody the values of the Federation: a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability; collaboration and partnership across the community development field and advocacy for policies that improve the quality of life of families and communities.

Jim founded Chelsea Investment Corporation in 1986 and has specialized in financing and developing affordable housing projects since 1992.  During his distinguished career, Jim’s responsibilities have included project acquisition, financing, design, construction, marketing, and property management of commercial, industrial, and residential projects throughout the country.

A respected authority in all aspects of real estate development and management, Jim is a former lecturer for the MSRE degree program at University of San Diego, Past Chairman of the San Diego Building Industry Association, and sought-after panelist and speaker.

Jim is a passionate advocate for the creation and preservation of safe, accessible, and affordable housing; his service to the industry has recently been acknowledged by his induction into the Building Industry Association of San Diego Hall of Fame.

In addition to growing the Chelsea family of companies to 100+ employees and a development portfolio of $3 billion, Jim is an attorney with an advanced degree in tax law. As Chairman, he is involved in strategic management of Chelsea and its affiliates.

“The outstanding individuals like Jim Schmid, dedicated organizations, and unique projects that are nominated each year is a testament to the strength of the affordable housing industry and community development in our region,” said Rebecca Louie, San Diego Housing Federation Board Chair. “Celebrating the 34th annual Ruby Awards comes at an important time, as the Housing Federation continues to broaden its reach.”

“Jim has a long history of partnering with our non-profit sector. Serving Seniors, Father Joe’s Villages, the City Heights CDC, and the San Diego Regional Center are just a few of the organizations for whom Jim has stepped up to the plate to help with challenging housing projects that serve our communities,” said Stephen Russell, President, and CEO, of San Diego Housing Federation.
