Gwendolyn Joseph: Westminster Manor
What does having an affordable home mean to you?
To me, it means being able to maintain my independence at my age. I live on a very fixed income, and without affordable housing, I would be forced to depend on my children. I love being able to live alone still and take care of all of my own needs because I can afford to. It means not having to be anxious about my bills.
What challenges did you experience before receiving affordable housing?
I had to live with my family in a very small house and the rent was still not affordable. It was very uncomfortable, and as I started experiencing health issues it became almost impossible. I was unhappy and unhealthy overall.
How has having an affordable home changed your life?
I can have an entire space to myself and for my needs. I can afford to buy things I want now as opposed to only having money for my needs. It feels nice to decorate my space and be comfortable in it. It has helped my mental health. I no longer have to worry about being able to afford my rent.
What is your current community involvement?
I am very involved at Westminster Manor. I have lived here for 18 years, and I helped to set up the San Diego Food Bank delivery to our building. I love attending all events put on by our Case Managers, and I enjoy helping to cook for all our meal-related events. Some of my best friends live in this building and we sit in the lobby every day for a few hours, we like talking to everyone who walks in or out. I love being able to live in this beautiful building and appreciate that affordable housing exists.
