Finding Home: Miss Joyce’s Journey of Advocacy and Community - "With You All the Way"
The journey of Joyce Roberts, aka “Miss Joyce,” is a testament to the transformative power of community and support. Originally from the bustling streets of Boston, Joyce made her way to sunny San Diego in 1978, trading snow for sunshine. She vividly remembers the day she arrived, standing outside Village Square Apartments, hoping to secure a place to call home amid the cold. She knew firsthand the struggles of securing a safe place to call home, having slept outside with others just to increase her chances of being accepted for an apartment.
Her early experiences shaped her understanding of the challenges many face in accessing affordable housing. For Joyce, finding stability was not just about securing a roof over her head; it was about building a sense of belonging and community. Joyce’s experience is not just a personal narrative; it embodies the essence of what the San Diego Housing Federation (SDHF) stands for: resilience, advocacy, and connection.
After dedicating 37 years to the medical field, primarily in dialysis and pulmonary care, Joyce sought new opportunities and a deeper purpose. In 2013, she found that purpose with the San Diego Housing Federation (SDHF) when she first learned about the organization through the Resident Popular Educators (RPE) program, now known as Residents United Network (RUN). “It was there that I discovered my voice, the power of advocacy, and the ability to be part of something bigger—a community committed to change,” she reflects.
Her involvement with SDHF has been profound and multifaceted. Joyce has participated in numerous conferences, training programs, and events that have enriched her understanding of the housing sector. As a board member of Housing California and an advocate with Residents United Network, she has played an instrumental role in shaping policies that affect countless lives. Her lived experiences have allowed her to advocate authentically for those who find themselves in similar circumstances, making her insights invaluable.
Joyce has been honored with two Ruby Awards, reflecting her dedication and the positive impact she has made in her community. She recalls one of her most memorable moments with SDHF being recognized for her contributions. “It was a shock to me,” she humbly states, “to be acknowledged for my efforts.” This recognition not only validated her work but also reinforced her belief that every voice matters in the fight for housing justice.
As we celebrate the year’s accomplishments through our end-of-year campaign, “With You All the Way,” Joyce’s story exemplifies the resilience and innovation that defines our work. The San Diego Housing Federation has been a constant partner in her journey, offering the resources, knowledge, and community connections she needed to thrive. Joyce’s advocacy has helped foster a more inclusive housing landscape, empowering residents to have their voices heard in policymaking.
However, the work is far from over. As we look forward to another year of challenges and opportunities, we invite you to join us in ensuring that this vital work continues.
