Britney Ligon’s Story of Dedication and the Power of Community Support - "With You All the Way"

Britney Ligon’s career path has always been about helping others, beginning with a role that many might see as her calling—supporting seniors in hospice and palliative care. In that field, Britney provided more than just physical care; she offered compassion, guidance, and stability to families during some of life’s most challenging moments. But as her experience grew, so did her perspective. Britney began to see that the challenges facing her clients and others in vulnerable communities often extended far beyond healthcare. She noticed how housing instability, financial uncertainty, and limited resources were constant obstacles, particularly for seniors living on fixed incomes.

The realization that housing could play a pivotal role in a person’s well-being became a turning point for Britney. As she explored new ways to make an impact, she discovered the San Diego Housing Federation (SDHF) and the Affordable Housing Management Academy. This program, dedicated to training individuals passionate about affordable housing, became Britney’s introduction to the transformative work of SDHF. “When I connected with the San Diego Housing Federation, I realized there was so much more I could do to address housing disparities,” she reflects.

“The Affordable Housing Management Academy was more than just a program—it was an eye-opener. I learned that SDHF doesn’t just focus on housing as a physical need but as a foundation for stability, opportunity, and growth. I realized this was an organization that cared deeply about people and creating real change, and I wanted to be part of that mission.”

Encouraged by her experience in the Affordable Housing Management Academy, Britney’s journey with SDHF deepened when she joined the Developers of Color SEED Academy, a program for emerging Developers from underrepresented communities. The training, mentorship, and community support she received there solidified her commitment to a career in affordable housing development. “SDHF was with me every step of the way,” she recalls. “They didn’t just provide education; they opened doors, provided scholarships, and introduced me to mentors who had walked this path before me. They gave me the tools and the confidence to take the next step, and that’s something I will always be grateful for.”

Britney’s journey with SDHF hasn’t just been about professional growth—it’s also been about building lasting connections and finding inspiration. One of her most powerful moments with the Federation came at the Affordable Housing and Community Development Conference, where she listened to residents share stories of finally finding safe, stable homes after years of housing insecurity. “One story, in particular, stands out,” she remembers. “A family who had been waiting for years to secure affordable housing described the peace and security they finally felt in their new home. That moment drove home the impact of SDHF’s work. This wasn’t just about housing; it was about creating a space where families could truly live, thrive, and feel secure.”

Inspired by these stories and experiences, Britney has since obtained her real estate license, further expanding her skills to support her career in affordable housing. She is now poised to make a difference not only for herself and her family but also for the San Diego community. “SDHF gave me the confidence to pursue this path. They showed me that, no matter how big the challenge, there’s a community standing by you, ready to support, empower, and guide you.”

Britney’s journey is just one of many that illustrates the San Diego Housing Federation’s commitment to building a community where everyone, regardless of background, income, or life circumstance, has the opportunity for safe and stable housing and career advancement. Through programs like the Affordable Housing Management Academy and Developers of Color SEED Academy, SDHF invests in people who are reshaping the future of affordable housing in San Diego.
