Thank you to all who attended and supported the Annual Affordable Housing and Community Development Conference on Thursday, October 13th as well as the Pre-Conference Institutes on Wednesday, October 12th. We are truly grateful to the sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and many contributors that made this event a success!

On Wednesday, nearly 100 Resident Services Support Network (RSSN) Institute participants were welcomed with an inspiring breakfast speaker, Ginger Hitzke. Founder of Hitzke Development (hyperlink http://www.hitzkedevelopment.com/usgbc.html), Ginger Hitzke kicked off this year’s RSSN institute with an intimate one-on-one interview, detailing how her passion led her from working as a secretary at a development company to being a powerful force in San Diego’s affordable housing community. Resident services staff are among the most valuable staff members in ensuring a successful affordable housing community and supporting the success of individual residents.

The mission of the Resident Services Support Network is to provide Affordable Housing Resident Services professionals with meaningful and practical support through educational forums, networking opportunities, and peer learning in order to see residents flourish. The Institute is a day of training from industry professionals on the foundation elements of providing Resident Services in affordable housing.

That same day, guests at the Fundamentals Institute were busy taking notes from a dedicated group of affordable housing gurus. The Introductory Track provided attendees with an introduction to affordable housing development and finance, while the Intermediate Track focused on the basics of transaction structuring – the use of federal, state, and local financing tools, and financing gap analysis.

The morning of the Annual Conference on Thursday kicked off with a keynote presentation by Breakfast Keynote Speaker: Sara Draper-Zivetz, Associate Director for the Terner Center for Housing Innovation at Berkeley. She has been with the Center since its launch in early 2015. The Terner Center formulates bold strategies to house families from all walks of life in vibrant, sustainable, and affordable homes and communities.

After a round of morning workshops, attendees gathered for lunch and another keynote address by Dr. Antwi Akom, Associate Professor of Environmental Sociology at San Francisco State University and Founding Partner of I-SEEED (the Institute for Sustainable Economic, Educational, and Environmental Design).

See Dr. Akom’s talk at TEDX HERE.

Throughout the day, workshops in 6 tracks brought attendees together in smaller groups for in-depth learning and discussion. This year’s tracks included: Design & Development, Housing Finance, Cultivating the Sector, Policy & Advocacy, Supportive Housing, and Emerging Trends.
