Each year, the San Diego Housing Federation brings together the region’s housing and community development leaders and professionals for the county’s only day-long conference dedicated to building and preserving affordable homes and vibrant communities.
Thank you to all who attended and supported the 2015 Annual Affordable Housing and Community Development Conference on Thursday, October 29th as well as the Pre-Conference Institutes on Wednesday, October 28th. We are truly grateful to the sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and many contributors that made this event a success!
On Wednesday, nearly 100 attendees joined us at the Resident Services Support Network Institute to grow the knowledge and skills necessary to continue providing meaningful impact in this important field. Sue Reynolds, President and CEO of Community HousingWorks, joined us to kick the morning off with her trademark energy and wisdom. Then attendees began diving into topics such as Program Development, Financial Literacy for Kids, Advanced Care Planning, Motivational Interviewing, and Health and Wellness.
That same day, guests at the Fundamentals Institute were busy taking notes from a dedicated group of affordable housing gurus. The Introductory Track provided attendees with an introduction to affordable housing development and finance, while the Intermediate Track focused on the basics of transaction structuring – the use of federal, state, and local financing tools, and financing gap analysis.
The morning of the Annual Conference on Thursday kicked off with a keynote presentation by California State Assembly Member Shirley Weber, who brought the room to their feet with her passionate address regarding the important role that affordable housing plays in the future of our families and our larger community.
After a round of morning workshops, attendees gathered for lunch and another keynote address by California State Treasurer John Chiang. The Treasurer managed to crack jokes, share his personal story, and lead us to think critically about the future of California’s economic development all in under 20 minutes. The Treasurer took time to recognize the advocates, developers, and partners in the room for their tireless efforts to create affordable housing opportunities.
Throughout the day, workshops in 6 tracks brought attendees together in smaller groups for in-depth learning and discussion. This year’s tracks included: Design & Development, Policy & Advocacy, Supportive Housing, Outreach & Influence, Housing Finance, and Emerging Trends.
